As the temperatures plummet and we cozy up into the holiday spirit, we wanted to send out our appreciation to all our loyal customers. Your continued support for our local mechanic shop in Edmonton is always the best gift of all!

Since 1990 we’ve made auto repair affordable, approachable, and transparent for Edmonton residents. With more than three decades serving our fair town, our business model has always been about giving you peace of mind while building a better trade-in value.

As a part of our continued dedication to new and old customers alike, we’ve put together three seasonal specials. Let’s get you prepared for winter conditions and save on our most popular vehicle inspections.

Special #1: Seasonal Check Up

Before we head into the depths of winter, it’s time to get a seasonal check-up on your car or truck. Now for only $59.95 + GST, our experienced staff ensures your vehicle is ready to hit those icy roads and easily move through snowy conditions.

This service inspects the roadworthiness of your vehicle, checks brake systems, reviews tire tread, and tops up fluids. The price of shop supplies, including oil and filters, is not included and will vary by vehicle

Special #2: Complete 300-Point Vehicle Inspection

Whether you are buying a used vehicle, getting ready to sell, or just need peace of mind, we are offering a Complete 300 Point Vehicle Inspection for $169.96 + GST (shop supplies not included).

This comprehensive service goes beyond simple roadworthiness to check off more than 300 inspection points. Expect a full report on the status of your engine, suspension, drivetrain, steering, brake system, and more.

Special #3: Out-of-Province Inspection

Moving to Alberta? As your new, trusted, fully licensed mechanic in Edmonton, we’d love to help you get your vehicle signed off with an Out of Province Inspection. Our Out of Province Inspection is only $189.95 + GST (shop supplied extra) for a limited time.

Why do you need this inspection? If you are bringing a car or truck from outside the province, it must pass this safety inspection within 90 days of your move. Without it, the province won’t issue new provincial plates.

How Bruce Stewart Can Help

Of course, we don’t just do inspections. We are a full-service mechanic in Edmonton. As such, we are pleased to offer bumper-to-bumper service, including the most common repairs:

  • Complete Brake Systems
  • Joint and Drive Shaft

The new year is here, and 2023 promises to be as snowy and cold as ever here in Edmonton. So while you’re making goals and looking ahead to 2023, we’re here to remind you to keep your winter tires as safe as you would keep an ultra-motivating new year’s resolution in January!

We know that those iconic (or notorious) Alberta winters are long, so while it feels like the snow and cold have already been here a while, the winter is far from over. Do you know if your winter tires are ready to carry you through another season without incident?

In this post, we’re talking about the importance of winter tires and how you know whether or not they’re getting the job done – or if you need to seek tire repair for the Edmonton winter.

Snow on the road

Why You Need Winter Tires

It almost goes without saying, but not all tires are alike! Legally, there are key differences that make a tire a winter one. Certified winter tires will provide the best performance for snow, ice, and cold conditions. While Alberta doesn’t make it mandatory for winter tires as some other provinces do, you can quickly tell when someone is driving without them!

Tire rubber naturally stiffens when it gets colder. Winter tires maintain this elasticity upwards to -30°C, which we know happens more often than we like to admit here in Edmonton.

Winter tires are more flexible and are able to maintain a better grip on snowy roads. The deeper treads and siping (those very tiny slits in the tire) also give better traction, which allows you to go up hills, stop, and drive in deep snow without issue.

You’ll notice that the siping looks very different on winter tires. These are actually specifically designed to push snow outwards and avoid build-up.

While you can have all-weather tires instead of winter tires, winter tires are the best option for traction and control in an Alberta winter.

Identifying Winter Tires

First, it’s essential to identify whether or not you are actually working with winter tires on your vehicle. There are a few classifications to be aware of.

  • Winter tires are distinguishable by an illustration of a mountain with a snowflake on them. They are best used in winter and swapped out for summer tires.
  • All-weather tires will also have a mountain with a snowflake on them. They can be used year-round but are less high performing than winter tires – and will wear faster with year-round driving.
  • All-season tires have an M+S symbol on them. These are good for year-round but are better suited for milder winters (so not Alberta!).

Winter tire

How to Tell if Your Winter Tires Are Still Good

The performance of your winter tires relies heavily on how much tread is left. If you’ve been using your tires for a few seasons, you can easily check the tread to see if they’re still good.

Effective winter tires should have a minimum of 4 mm of tread. You can measure using a ruler, but a tire tread gauge works best. Check the tread on both sides and the middle of the tire.

Also, be sure to check the tire pressure. Tires may need to fill up after sitting over the summer.

If you’re ever unsure, bring your winter tires to a tire repair shop in Edmonton and they can tell you if your winter tires are still good or not.

How Bruce Stewart Can Help

If you still need to switch over your winter tires, now is the time to do so! You can switch to your winter tires as soon as the weather begins to cool down.

It’s essential to have a full set of four winter tires. If one or all tires need replacing, we can help you get good tires for your needs, whether all-weather or winter ones.

You can also bring your vehicle to us for tire repairs to prepare for Edmonton winters. We can see if your winter tires need a quick and easy repair before they head out on the road again.

Power steering is a critical system; you’ll know something is wrong when it fails. For example, the steering wheel may groan or vibrate, there could be fluid under your car, or worse, it could give out completely while you’re trying to turn your vehicle through an intersection.

If you suspect there is an issue with your power steering, it’s time to schedule a visit to your local auto repair shop in Edmonton. But do you know the signs?

Here is a quick overview of the most common indicators of a power steering issue — and when it’s time to call in the professionals.

What Is Power Steering?

Every car comes equipped with a power steering system. Until the early 2000s, most cars had a hydraulic steering system, which consists of a pump and a rack that rely on lubrication from power steering fluid. These days, most new vehicles rely on an electric system, which pulls energy from the car’s battery.

Imagine the force it would take for you to manually turn the wheels while operating your car or truck. Impossible right? Whatever the mechanism, power steering makes it feasible for you to physically turn the steering wheel (and, therefore, the car) with minimal effort.

In short, without power steering, it would be exceedingly difficult to drive your car or truck anywhere without superhuman strength.

Common Signs Of Power Steering Failure

Like other systems in your car, the power steering system is prone to wear and tear. You’ll also need to occasionally top up the fluid if you have a hydraulic system.

So how do you know the sound you hear or symptom you experience is related to power steering? Here are five of the most common signs:

Whining or Squealing As You Turn the Wheel

Next time you are driving around Edmonton, pay close attention to the noises coming from your vehicle. For example, if you notice a whining or squealing noise as you turn the wheel, this may indicate a power steering fluid issue.

Check fluid levels to see if they are low and top up as needed. If you notice squealing, you should also look for bubbles in the fluid, puddles, or a red stain underneath your car the next time it’s parked. This could indicate a power steering fluid leak.

Difficulty Turning the Wheel

Are you having increasing issues physically turning the wheel as you operate your vehicle? This is another telltale sign of a power steering failure.

But if the steering assist fails, you’ll need some serious muscle power to get the car to go where you want. So, double-check your power steering fluid levels, if they look fine and the issue persists, it’s time for a mechanic.

Steering Wheel Vibration

steering wheel

Although a vibrating steering column can indicate many issues, one is a failing power steering system. The vibrations will be especially apparent while turning the wheel. It can feel like it’s vibrating, shaking, groaning, scraping, or pulsing.

In this case, you’ll need to bring it in for inspection from a mechanic; these vibrations could also suggest other issues, including unbalanced wheels, worn-out brake pads, or faulty brake callipers.

Power Steering Fluid Leaks Underneath Your Car

This is an easy visual sign but a bad one: red or dark brown fluid underneath your car. If you notice pools or dark stains as you pull out of your parking space, you likely have a power steering leak.

Power steering fluid, when new, is red. However, if you see a puddle or spot under your car, it’ll likely be reddish-brown to dark brown, depending on how old it is.

No matter what the colour, if you notice any leaks, bring your car into a local Edmonton mechanic to check it out.

If you live in Edmonton, chances are you are commuting to work. This means you’ll eventually need an oil change in Edmonton! Oil changes are a part of your regular vehicle maintenance schedule.

When it comes to oil changes, do you know whether your vehicle takes synthetic or regular oil? Many people trust their mechanic with this decision, but as a vehicle owner, you should also know the difference.

Let’s dive into the differences between synthetic and regular oil, and highlight a few advantages of each.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Synthetic Oil

Believe it or not, synthetic oil was a German development from World War II. The Allied Forces cut-off Germany from an oil supply, forcing them to develop alternatives. One of these alternatives was synthetic oil. Almost a century later, synthetic oils have come to dominate the market.

As the name suggests, synthetic oil is a human-made lubricant for all types of vehicles, from passenger jets to sedans. Like traditional oil, it’s still a petroleum product, but it’s been chemically modified – hence why it’s called synthetic.

This manipulation of the formula and additives means synthetic lubricant looks quite different at the microscopic level. Traditional oil contains millions of molecules that are all varied in size and shape. A drop of synthetic, on the other hand, is made up of molecules very close in size and shape.

Synthetic oil may be modified to improve consistency, expand temperature range, and for specific applications.

Advantages of Synthetic Oil for Your Vehicle

Longer Lasting

Many people will remember having to change their oil religiously every 5,000 kilometres. But, with synthetic oil, most last for double the amount of distance, if not more.

Most automakers and lubricant companies recommend changing your synthetic oil every 10,000 kilometres (or every six months). You’ll even see suggestions of 15,000 kilometres or more with premium synthetic oils.

Better Consistency

Inside your engine, there are a lot of moving parts, which move at incredible speeds. Your engine’s performance hinges on the lubricant’s viscosity to facilitate the rapid movement of these parts.

Also, synthetic oils often have additives and formulas designed to work in different climates. In Edmonton, temperatures often swing wildly. So, you’ll want your oil to maintain its performance level no matter what’s happening outside.

Cleaner Motor

Clean motor

If you’ve ever tried to change your own oil, you know how dirty the motor can get between changes. This is because as the oil moves through your engine and is exposed to high heat, it breaks down over time. Eventually, it will begin to leave grimy deposits throughout your engine.

But this is less of a problem with synthetic oil. It’s engineered to run cleaner, break down slower, and, therefore, leave less sludge throughout your engine.

Advantages of Regular Oil for Your Vehicle

Cheaper Than Synthetic

As a less manufactured product, conventional oil has less production costs, which boils down to a lower cost per litre when compared with synthetic lubricants. Which isn’t so much of a benefit for your engine, as it is for your wallet.

Not Ideal for Cold Storage

While rare, the additives within synthetic oil may begin to separate after prolonged periods in a cold environment. Again, an unlikely circumstance, but it is possible.

Are you planning on putting your vehicle into storage for the Winter? Ask your mechanic for advice on the best type of oil to use during your next oil change in Edmonton.

Getting an Oil Change in Edmonton? Which Oil is Right for Your Vehicle?

Oil change

Your owner’s manual is your best friend when choosing synthetic or conventional motor oil for your vehicle.

The manual will almost always recommend one or the other and likely highlight several suggested formulas (for example, 5W-20 or 5W-30 oil). Some formulas suit heavy highway driving and towing, while others work for shorter commutes.

But even with your manual in hand, we often hear from our customers that they are still worried about making the wrong choice of motor oil for their car or truck. This is where we come in. We can help you translate all the mechanical jargon to choose a motor oil that will support your vehicle’s performance.

It’s never a good time to get a flat tire. Whether you’re on your way to your kid’s piano recital or late to your cousin’s wedding, flat tires have a habit of showing up at just the wrong time.

No matter how late you are, driving on a flat tire is never a good idea. Driving on a flat can cause extensive damage to the tire itself and your car’s rim and alignment. You’ll want to change your tire yourself or get it to a tire repair shop in Edmonton – ideally as soon as possible.

While flat tires are an unpleasant surprise, it doesn’t need to dominate your whole day! Check out our handy tips on changing to a spare tire and sourcing the best tire repair shop in Edmonton.

Flat Tire While Driving

Flat tire while driving

It’s not always immediately noticeable that you have a flat tire while driving. Look out for your car pulling to the side of the road and an odd and consistent clunking noise.

Reduce your speed until you can pull over to the side safely. If you have them, place any safety cones out while you inspect your car for a flat. You can call AMA, CAA, or Bruce Stewart’s roadside assistance to arrange for a tire change onsite or to tow you to the nearest Edmonton tire repair shop if the spare/dummy tire doesn’t work.

Here are some basic steps for changing your flat tire yourself:

  1. Grab your spare tire, jack, and lug nut wrench from your trunk.
  2. Lightly loosen the lug nuts by turning them counterclockwise, just enough so they’re not locked tightly. This makes it easier to remove them when you fully jack up the car.
  3. Place your jack under a sturdy part of the frame. Your car’s owner manual will tell you where it’s a good place to position the jack. Use the jack handle to raise the frame. Never stick any hands or legs under the vehicle.
  4. Remove the lug nuts altogether. Keep them close, and don’t let them roll away.
  5. Remove the flat tire and place it to the side.
  6. Put the spare tire on, lining it up with the wheel studs where the lug nuts go on.
  7. Install your lug nuts again. Tighten them until firm, but not too firm, as the car is still on the jack.
  8. Lower the jack by turning counterclockwise.
  9. Give the lug nuts one final tighten.
  10. Place the flat tire in the trunk.
  11. Never exceed more than 80km while driving on a spare (or dummy) tire. Only drive on it while necessary until you can get your car to an Edmonton tire repair shop.

Always prepare for the unexpected. Keep an emergency kit in your car with items such as a flashlight, safety cone, jumper cables, small shovel, whistle, warning lights, etc. Also, familiarize yourself with your owner’s manual and where your spare tire is stored. Check your spare tire regularly to ensure it has enough air!

Flat Tire While Parked

The process for dealing with a flat tire while parked is the same as above. If you decide to change your tire while parked, be very aware of your surroundings and ensure it’s safe to do so. Be mindful of other cars while in a parking lot.

If the car has been parked for a while, make sure the flat tire is not flat-spotting first. Flat-spotting occurs when the tire flattens against the ground when it has been in the same spot for an extended period. Usually, this is temporary, and the tire will round out again as it warms up while driving. However, tires parked for many months may experience permanent flat-spotting.

As a long-standing mechanic in Edmonton, we understand that not everyone is mechanically inclined. This is why we suggest following these easy car care tips to protect your recently purchased vehicle.

Splurge On An Undercoat

splurge on undercoat

Winters are rough for both Albertans and their vehicles. During the colder months, the province regularly salts and sands the roadways to mitigate the ice and snow.

While this practice is safety-conscious and great for traction, sand and salt are terrible for the rust-prone components on your vehicle’s undercarriage.

Over time, these elements eat away at your car or truck’s frame, oil pans, muffler, transfer cases, suspension arms, and other metal surfaces. This means, in Alberta, it pays to splurge on an undercoat for your vehicle.

An undercoat is a layer of defensive wax or rubber sprayed on the underside of vehicles that helps to protect against corrosion. It’s an investment that more than pays off, reducing the risk of rust damage and costly body work.

Peruse The Manual

If it’s been a while since you’ve bought a new vehicle, chances are a lot has changed. The owner’s manual includes all the details you need to better understand your car.

Reading your owner’s manual may not be the most exciting evening reading, but it serves as a valuable ‘frequently asked questions’ to your car, such as what motor oil to use or the recommended service schedule.

Check Your Fluid Levels Regularly

Six fluids pump through your car or truck to keep it running smoothly. These fluids have a shelf life and require regular top-ups or complete system flushes.

Check your owner’s manual for recommended schedules, and contact Bruce Stewart Automotive for regular servicing!

  • Engine Oil
    • Colour: Yellow or amber (new). Brown or black (old)Engine oil is a critical fluid that lubricants your vehicle’s engine. Engine oil needs to be changed regularly, every 5,000 to 10,000 kilometres – depending on the vehicle. If it smells like gasoline, schedule an appointment with an Edmonton mechanic immediately.
  • Coolant
    • Colour: Yellow, blue, green, red, pink, or purple (manufacturer dependant)As the name suggests, coolant keeps your vehicle’s motor from overheating. Check your owner’s manual for the flushing schedule, typically every 50,000 kilometres. However, if your engine starts overheating, bring your vehicle in for immediate attention.
  • Power Steering Fluid
    • Colour: Orange or pink (new), Red (Old)Power steering fluid lubricates your vehicle’s hydraulic power steering system. If your power steering goes out, you’ll immediately struggle to manoeuvre while driving. Just like other fluids, the power steering fluid needs flushing on a regular basis. Confirm the recommended schedule with your owner’s manual.Note: some newer vehicles will have an electric power steering system instead of hydraulic, which will not use fluid. If you’re unsure, consult your owners’ manual or peruse under the hood – if there’s no power steering reservoir, the system is electric.
  • Transmission Fluid
    • Colour: Bright Red, blue, green, or purple (new). Brown, muddy (Old)Transmission fluid is another critical product that keeps your vehicle operating—it lubricates the transmission system, ensuring that the gears don’t grind as your vehicle shifts. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended schedule for transmission fluid changes.
  • Windshield Washer Fluid
    • Colour: Varies by manufacturer, often bright pink, yellow, or blue.Windshield washer fluid is the easiest to manage on your own. It keeps your windshield clear for visibility, and all manufacturers offer season-specific fluids. If it’s winter, you’ll want to use washer fluid that can withstand those cold Alberta temperatures! You’ll know it’s time to top up when the indicator light flashes on your dash or you pull the wipers and no fluid comes out.
  • Brake Fluid
    • Colour: Bright yellow (new). Brown, black (Old)Brake fluid lubricates your car’s brake system. It may be time to flush the system if you notice soft, spongey, or non-responsive brakes. If you see your ABS indicator light, this may also suggest an issue with the brake fluid.

Inspect Your Tires Regularly

Check your tires regulary

Tires wear down over time. This is normal! You’ll need to invest in a new set of tires every few years (or less if you drive for a living). In Alberta, you’ll also need a set of winter and summer tires, each designed for their respective seasonal conditions.

Although it’s less urgent for a brand new vehicle with brand new tires, you’ll want to regularly inspect your tires for wear and damage. Watch for uneven wear, low tire pressure, cracks, unbalanced alignment or low tread.

Find A Reputable Mechanic In Edmonton

Whether you’ve just purchased a new or a new-to-you vehicle, you’ll eventually need a reliable mechanic. Having a local Edmonton mechanic on hand helps alleviate any vehicle-related stress!

But not all mechanics in Edmonton are cut from the same cloth. You’ll want to find a trustworthy automotive centre where service is friendly and efficient.

At Bruce Stewart Automotive, we understand that not everyone knows the inner workings of their vehicle. It’s why we provide fair rates and transparent service, so you can easily understand what’s happening under the hood.

If you’ve just moved to Edmonton, you already know that your to-do list is pretty big! There’s settling into your new home, starting a new job, enrolling your children in school, setting up utilities, and, let’s not forget, registering your out-of-province vehicle.

The vehicle registration process isn’t as straightforward as going to Service Alberta and switching over your plates. You’ll need to book your car or truck in for an out of province inspection in Edmonton.

Let’s take a look at what an out of province inspection entails and the step-by-step process on how to complete this important task!

What’s An Out Of Province Inspection?

cars inside the shop

Alberta is one of several Canadian provinces that require all out-of-province vehicles to pass an inspection before issuing local plates and registration tags. The inspection helps ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and that it meets Alberta’s road safety standards.

If you’ve just moved to the province, you’ll have 90 days before you legally have to move over the vehicle registration. To do so, you’ll need to find a mechanic with a license issued by the Vehicle Inspection Program.

On average, a thorough inspection by a licensed repair shop takes two hours. Your mechanic is responsible for submitting the signed Record of Inspection to the Alberta Registry — even if your car or truck has failed.

If your vehicle has failed inspection and you need to make necessary repairs, you’ll have ten days to complete those repairs before the inspection expires.

Exemptions:

Does everyone in Edmonton need to get out of province inspection? Not necessarily! There are a few exceptions to the inspection rule in Edmonton and elsewhere in Alberta. Let’s discuss:

  • New vehicles purchased out of province: If you have purchased a brand-new vehicle in Canada in the last 90 days from an authorized dealer and the vehicle is in your name, you are exempt from needing an out of province inspection in Edmonton.
  • New vehicles purchased in the United States: If you have a Bill of Sale or lease agreement signed in the last 90 days from an authorized dealer, and the vehicle is in your name, you are exempt from the required out of province inspection.

The vehicle will also need two stamps on Transport Canada Form 1. One stamp must come from the US/Canada border and one from the Registrar of Imported Vehicles Inspection Center. Note that RIV compliance inspections are through appointment only. Find your nearest RIV Inspection location here!

  • Commercial Vehicles: If you own a commercial vehicle from out of province that has had a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate from another Canadian jurisdiction in the past 90 days, you are exempt from the out of province inspection requirement.
  • Vehicles from British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba: If you own a vehicle from one of these provinces and it is newer than four years old or has passed a government inspection in one of these provinces in the last 90 days, you’re exempt from the out of province inspection requirement.

It’s worth noting that if you are trying to register an out-of-province vehicle in Edmonton that falls into one of the following categories – it does not qualify for an exemption:

  • Salvage
  • Non-repairable
  • Unsafe
  • Rebuilt
  • Right-hand drive
  • Custom or homebuilt
  • Kit cars
  • Lifted or lowered vehicles

If you want to receive an exemption for any of the above reasons, you will still need to present the vehicle at an Alberta Registry office beforehand. The registry agent will be able to help you through the exemption process.

Getting An Out Of Province Inspection In Edmonton

Checklist

If you are ready to bring your out-of-province vehicle in for inspection in Edmonton, here is the step-by-step process you’ll need to follow.

  • Request a form: Find an Alberta Registry Office near you to purchase an Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Request form. You will need to bring this form with you to your appointment.
  • Get your vehicle inspected: Book an out of province inspection with a licensed technician. Provide them with your Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Request form. Once complete, the technician will issue a pass or fail grade, note any required repairs, and sign a Record of Inspection.
  • Take care of any applicable repairs: If your vehicle hasn’t passed inspection, you’ll need to complete any noted repairs within 10 days before the original inspection expires. Once the repair work is complete, the vehicle goes through a reinspection.

Note that If you miss the 10-day window, you’ll have to inspect your car or truck again to restart the process!

  • Present inspection certificate to an Alberta Registry Agent: After your vehicle has passed, you’ll have 14 days to submit your Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Certificate and a Record of Inspection to the Alberta Registry.

If you miss this deadline for any reason, you’ll have to start this process all over again – so be sure to make the necessary arrangements!

From timing belts to power steering issues to oil changes, in Edmonton, it can be difficult to source a car mechanic that’s fair, safe, and values their customers.

It’s a big thing to go to the mechanic. It’s time out of your workday or otherwise busy schedule – and it usually means there isn’t something quite right with your vehicle. That’s anxiety-inducing for anyone!

For our first blog piece, we wanted to take the time to reiterate our values and mission here at Bruce Stewart. Plus – you can expect regular blog pieces going forward!

Our Values

Above all, our goal is to get you safely back on the road with minimal delay!

Through fair labour billing, which is calculated through either actual hours spent on repair or an industry-approved hour allotment for any given job, we are determined to provide the best financial value to our customers.

Additionally, we strive each day to offer high-quality auto parts that meet or exceed the manufacturer’s specifications. The people of Edmonton can rest assured that we will always do our utmost to do right by them – and their wallets!

Our goal is to provide fair, honest service to our customers in Edmonton. Whether it’s a simple oil change or a significant repair, we want everyone to feel cared for and in good hands. Our philosophy is that we do what we say we’ll do – always at a fair price.

This level of service is how we’ve been able to cultivate a large number of lifetime customers and maintain an excellent turnover rate within our staff – with some team members coming up on 20 years with us! We value our talent and promote in-house frequently.

As well, we understand that car repairs are objectively expensive – and can make a significant dent in your monthly income. That’s why we’ve come up with financing options as well as ninety-day labour and part guarantees. If something happens to a part we’ve installed after a service appointment – you don’t want to have to worry about reaching into your wallet again.

Our Services

Car shop

These are only the tip of the iceberg – and generally the most common repairs most vehicles require. We also offer a Car Service package, which includes annual vehicle inspections, service reminders, and an annual summary of repair costs, if any, upon request. For those in Edmonton, that oil change has never been easier.

At Bruce Stewart’s Auto Repair Centre, we’ve designed our service program to provide our customers with worry-free driving, a better trade-in value, and lower repair and maintenance costs for services like oil changes, tire repair, wheel alignment, and brake repair.

These services are worth their weight in gold and will extend the life of your car. We make the process fuss-free, judgement-free, and take the anxiety out of the process for our valued customers.
